NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS "ZORBA THE GREEK" FIRST US BOOK CLUB EDITION 1953
NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS "ZORBA THE GREEK" FIRST US BOOK CLUB EDITION 1953
Published by Simon and Schuster, 1953
Originally published in 1946 Greece, Nikos Kazantzakis’ Zorba The Greek is what English reviewer George D. Painter called “a novel sweet and elate with sunlight, friendship and happiness, with a life full of both sensations and thoughts; it is, in every sense, a minor classic, and Zorba, one feels, is among the significant and permanent characters in modern fiction.”
The first English translation from the Greek came in 1952 by Carl Wildman and published in London by J.Lehman. The following year that same translation was published in the US by Simon and Schuster. This copy is the Book Club Edition of the US Simon Schuster publication from 1953. Book Club Editions (BCE for short) are printed for book clubs and their members, often with more affordable materials and smaller formats than the original publication.
BCE’s normally do not retain much monetary value, however, Zorba The Greek is one of those extraordinary books that’s an exception to the rule because it lowers the barrier to entry for collecting it.
