SHEL SILVERSTEIN "WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS" VINTAGE COPY 1981-1983

SHEL SILVERSTEIN "WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS" VINTAGE COPY 1981-1983

Published by Harper and Row, 1981-83

“If you are a dreamer, come in, If you are a dreamer, A wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, A magic bean buyer...Come in... for where the side-walk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Uni-corn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist. Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound.”

This beloved classic was originally published in 1974, while this copy is from the 1980's. Although it does not state a specific printing date, there are a few ways to estimate it was in 1980’s.

  • The first edition from 1974 would have stated first edition in the copyright page and this one does not.

  • On page 50 the title says “Googies” instead of the original “Gypsies”. I own a copy from 1979 that still says “Gypsies”, thus this revised printing was done after 1979.
  • The front inner flap might state the date 11/74, but this is irrelevant because the back inner flap of the dust jacket lists “A Light In The Attic” as one of the author’s works and that was not published until 1981, but it does not promote "Who wants a cheap rhinoceros?" published in 1983.

  • Lastly, the original publisher Harper and Row was renamed to Harpercollins in 1990.
