The “Rubáiyát” is a collection of poems written in quatrains in the 11th-12th century by Persian poet and astronomer Omar Khayyám. Whether or not he wrote all of the quatrains himself is still a topic of contention. However, the first English translation was done by Edward Fitzgerald in 1859, who would continue to expand and revise the translations resulting in new editions until 1889. It is by far the most popular translation of the “Rubáiyát”, with numerous editions still continuing to be printed. Personally I believe stronger translations have appeared in the 100+ years since the first English translation, but that being said, this is still a great entry to the “Rubaiyat”.

This Random House Edition was published in 1947, and contains a combination of Fitzgerald's multiple revisions and additions. Also included are wonderful illustrations from artist Mahmoud Sayah and an introduction by Louis Untermeyer.

Condition: Exceptional. Shows wear with flaws, but otherwise in very good condition.
